October 2026 street fair: 5000 people over 3 days, how many porta potty banks?

Our October street fair runs Friday evening through Sunday, expecting 5000 people total over three days. We'll have food vendors and beer gardens, so lines will be a problem if we don't get the restroom plan right. The fair is on a closed asphalt street, so the porta potty banks need to go on the curb lanes with truck access from the cross streets. I'm thinking clusters of standard units with at least one ADA-compliant unit per bank, maybe a restroom trailer near the main stage. How many units total should we order for a crowd this size with alcohol served? Does the three-day duration change the math versus a one-day event?

For a three-day street fair with 5000 people and alcohol served, order at least 80 standard portable toilets and one restroom trailer. The three-day duration and alcohol service increase the number of units needed compared to a one-day event.

Use the event planning guideline, which starts near one standard unit per 50 to 75 people for a four-hour event. With alcohol and food, you need more units to prevent long lines. Divide the units into clusters along the curb lanes. Each cluster must include an ADA-compliant unit to meet the ADA cluster rule. A restroom trailer near the main stage adds capacity and comfort.

Order enough units for the workers too. OSHA 1926.51 sets construction site minimums, but for event staff, use the general industry standard. Plan for one toilet per 15 to 35 employees.

The rental cost depends on the unit types, the three-day duration, and the service frequency. Weekly service is the norm, but for heavy use with alcohol, schedule a mid-event service visit. The vacuum truck needs clear access from cross streets. Confirm placement on level ground.
