What's the one thing you wish every event planner knew?

After 16 years running a portable toilet rental company, I've serviced thousands of events. The biggest misconception is that one standard unit handles 100 people all day. I show up to a weekend festival with 500 attendees, alcohol, and food vendors, and they've rented six units. By Saturday afternoon, the lines are 20 deep, the tanks are full, and I'm getting emergency calls. Planners forget heat, duration, and beer increase use. They also place units on soft grass where my vacuum truck sinks, or block access with vendor tents. What's the one thing you wish every event planner understood? Is it unit count, placement, or something else?

Event planners need to understand that portable toilet counts are a function of crowd size, event duration, and conditions like heat and alcohol consumption. The industry guideline starts near one standard unit per 50 to 75 people for a four-hour event, but that's a baseline. Alcohol, hot weather, and all-day festivals drive usage up sharply, requiring more units and more frequent service visits. A weekend event with 500 people, food, and beer might need 10 or more units, not six, to prevent overflows and long lines. Planners also underestimate placement needs. Units must be on level ground with clear truck access for the vacuum truck, soft grass or blocked paths mean missed service and extra costs. Getting the count and placement right avoids emergencies and keeps guests comfortable.
