Outdoor catering setup: put handwash station by food or porta potties?

I’m helping a friend set up for an outdoor wedding reception on a farm next month. The county health department has already told us we need at least one handwash station because we’re serving catered food. We’re renting a small cluster of portable toilets, including an ADA-compliant portable toilet, for about 80 guests over 5 hours. The ground is flat grass, and the service truck can pull right up. The debate is where to put the handwash station. Should it go right next to the food service area, so people can wash up before eating? Or should we place it by the porta potties, so it’s convenient after using the restroom? What’s the typical placement that passes inspection and keeps guests happy?

Place the handwash station closer to the food service area. The health department requires it for food handling safety, and guests are more likely to use it before eating if it is convenient. You still need to provide handwashing near the portable toilets, but that can be a simpler solution like a hand sanitizer dispenser mounted on each unit. Health inspectors look for accessible handwashing at food prep and serving stations to prevent contamination. For 80 guests over 5 hours, your portable toilet cluster with one ADA-compliant unit meets typical event guidelines. Ensure the handwash station has soap, water, and paper towels, and is on level ground. The service truck access you described is good; just confirm the placement allows for easy refilling and servicing during the event.
