What's the Weirdest Place You've Placed a Porta Potty?

After nine years driving a vacuum truck, I’ve placed a standard unit in some strange spots. The weirdest was on a narrow scaffold ledge for a high-rise facade repair. The crew needed it for a three-week job, about ten guys. The unit was a basic non-flushing model. We used a crane to get it up there. The ground was a city street, but the placement was sixty feet in the air. The truck could park below, but the hose had to stretch up the side of the building. It worked, but servicing it made me nervous every time. What’s the weirdest or most difficult place you’ve ever had to put a portable toilet? Did it require special equipment to get it there?

The weirdest place I've placed a portable toilet was inside a decommissioned railroad tunnel for a film shoot. The crew needed a standard portable toilet for a week-long shoot with about 15 people, which meets OSHA 1926.51 for construction. The tunnel entrance was too narrow for a truck, so we used an ATV with a small trailer to haul the unit a quarter-mile underground. The ground was uneven, so we had to build a wooden platform to keep it stable. Servicing required the vacuum truck to park at the tunnel mouth and run the hose all the way in, the darkness and echoes made it an eerie job. Weekly service is normal, but the remote placement added time and equipment costs. High-rise scaffolds like yours are a classic tough spot; crane lifts always spike the price due to the extra labor and coordination.

  • Deb K. Did you have to use a special long hose for that tunnel service run, or did you just connect a few standard hoses together?
