Bathroom remodel: will a porta potty work for 5 months in snow?

We're gutting our only bathroom starting January 2026, and the contractor says it'll take about 5 months. We're in Portland, OR, so we get snow and freezing rain a few times each winter. I'm looking at renting a standard portable toilet for just my wife and me, but I'm worried about it freezing solid or becoming unusable in the cold. The unit would sit on our gravel driveway, which is level and has good truck access for service. Has anyone here used a porta potty through a whole winter during a renovation? Do the rental companies handle winterization for long-term rentals, or should I be looking at a different type of unit?

Yes, a standard portable toilet will work for five months in snow if the rental company handles winterization. Standard units are designed for long-term use, including winter conditions. The rental company should add a brine or non-toxic antifreeze solution to the holding tank to prevent freezing. This is standard practice for winter service visits. Your gravel driveway with level ground and good truck access is ideal for placement and servicing.

For two people, a standard unit is sufficient. Weekly service is the norm, but in freezing weather, the rental company may adjust the service frequency or solution strength to keep the unit functional. Avoid flushing units or handwash stations in winter, as their fresh water tanks can freeze and require swapping.

Long-term rentals like this often have a flat monthly rate that includes delivery, service, and winterization. Confirm with the rental company that winterization is part of the service plan for your five-month rental in Portland's climate.
