What's the one thing you always check on a porta potty before using it?

After nine years driving a vacuum truck and a lifetime of using these things at county fairs and construction sites, I have a set routine before I step inside a standard portable toilet. The first thing my eyes go to is the floor, right inside the door. I'm looking for mud, standing water, or anything that suggests a leak or a recent flood. A wet floor is a bad sign. Then I check the paper situation. Is there any? Is it dry? After that, it's a quick sniff test, but the floor tells you more about the last user and the last service visit than the air does. I figure other folks who use these daily have their own checklist. What's the absolute first thing you check when you crack that door open? Is it the lock, the seat, or something else entirely?

The first thing I check is the lock mechanism. A broken or missing lock is a red flag for poor maintenance and potential safety issues. I then look at the floor for mud, standing water or debris, which indicates a leak or a missed cleaning. A dry floor means the unit was recently serviced. I also verify the toilet paper is present and dry, and do a quick visual scan of the seat and interior surfaces. A well-maintained standard portable toilet should have a clean floor, functional lock and adequate supplies. These checks take seconds but tell you everything about the last service visit and previous users.
