Office building evacuation drill: How many porta potties for 400 people for 4 hours?

Our office building is doing a full evacuation drill next month, and we need to set up portable restrooms outside for the 400 employees. The drill will last four hours, and there's no alcohol or food service. We have a paved parking lot with plenty of level ground and clear truck access for delivery and service. I'm trying to figure out how many standard units we need, plus the required ADA-compliant units. Should we consider a restroom trailer for a more comfortable setup, or are standard units sufficient for this short duration? What's the best way to calculate the total count and placement?

For a four-hour evacuation drill with 400 people and no alcohol or food, you need a minimum of eight standard portable toilets and one ADA-compliant portable toilet. This estimate uses the event planning guideline of about one standard unit per 50 people for a short event. The ADA 5 percent cluster rule requires that at least one unit in the cluster be accessible.

Standard units are sufficient for this short duration. A restroom trailer offers more comfort but requires a power source and leveling, which adds complexity and cost for a four-hour event. With clear truck access and level paved ground, your placement is ideal. Cluster the units together for convenience, ensuring the ADA unit has a clear path and the required turning space.

No service visit is needed during the drill. The weekly service norm does not apply. Rental costs are driven by the unit type, rental duration, and delivery distance. For a simple, cost-effective setup, the eight standard units and one ADA unit will meet the need.
