Backyard wedding: Can we put a porta potty on a sloped lawn?

We are planning our backyard wedding for October 2026 on my family's hillside property in Charleston, SC. We expect 140 guests over about 6 hours with a full dinner and an open bar. The rental company we spoke with emphasized that their units, including a standard portable toilet and an ADA-compliant portable toilet, need level ground. Our property is mostly sloped lawn, and the only truly flat area is near the driveway where the caterer will set up. A service truck can drive right up to that spot.

Is it possible to safely place a portable toilet on a gentle slope, or is that a hard no from rental companies? What happens if we have to use a slightly uneven spot?

It is possible to place a portable toilet on a gentle slope with some preparation, but rental companies strongly prefer level ground for safety and function. A standard portable toilet or an ADA-compliant portable toilet on a slope can tip, rock, or have liquid waste pooling at one end, making it unstable and unpleasant. The rental company will likely require you to level the spot with plywood, gravel, or temporary blocking before delivery.

For your wedding with 140 guests, dinner, and an open bar over six hours, you will need more than the basic guideline of one unit per 50-75 people. Plan for at least three or four units, including the ADA unit, to prevent long lines. The caterer's flat area near the driveway is ideal for truck access during the service visit, which will be needed after the event. If you use a slightly uneven spot, discuss it with the rental company, they may offer solutions or decline placement if it risks damage or complaints.
