October 2026 wedding: can we put a porta potty on a gravel driveway?

We're planning an October 2026 backyard wedding for about 140 guests, with a tent, dinner service, and an open bar. The event will run from afternoon into the evening, maybe 6-7 hours total. The only truly level spot on my parents' property is a crushed stone driveway, it's compacted gravel, not loose. I'm looking at renting a few standard units and one ADA-compliant unit, or possibly a small restroom trailer if it fits the budget. A vacuum truck can drive right up to this area for service. Will the gravel hold the units steady, or do I need to find a way to create a solid surface like concrete or pavers? What do rental companies usually require for stability on this kind of ground?

A compacted gravel driveway is an acceptable surface for portable toilets. The rental company will require that the ground is level and firm to avoid tipping. They may use staking and tie-downs for extra stability, especially for a taller restroom trailer.

For your 140-guest wedding with an open bar lasting 6-7 hours, the guideline of about one unit per 50 to 75 people for a four-hour event suggests you will need more than the minimum. Alcohol and a longer duration increase usage. Plan a cluster with several standard units and at least one ADA-compliant unit to meet the ADA 5 percent cluster rule. A restroom trailer offers flushing toilets and sinks but requires a generator or power hookup and is more expensive due to its features and the need for leveling. Service frequency for a one-day event is typically once after the event, but high-traffic use may require a mid-event service, which adds cost. The main cost drivers are the unit type, rental duration, number of service visits, and delivery distance. Good truck access helps keep the delivery and service cost lower.
