2026 driver certification: What's new in PSAI training?

Got a notice the PSAI updated their driver certification program. The last time I sent a driver through, it was mostly pumping basics and disposal regs. Now I hear there's new modules on handling formaldehyde-free deodorizer and servicing restroom trailers with their fresh water and gray water tanks. My guys are solid on the standard units, but the flushing deluxe units and ADA-compliant units with handwash stations are becoming more common on our routes. We also do more events where the placement is tight, so truck access is a constant puzzle. What are the new protocols? Is there a hands-on test for the high-rise unit pump-out now? How much longer is the certification taking with the added material?

The PSAI driver certification now includes new modules on servicing restroom trailers and handling formaldehyde-free deodorizer, reflecting industry shifts toward more complex units and environmentally safer chemicals. For restroom trailers, drivers learn to manage the fresh water tank for flushing and the gray water tank for waste, which requires coordinating pump-outs with standard holding tank service. The curriculum also covers the specific placement needs of trailers, like level ground and power access. On deodorizers, training emphasizes why treatment plants restrict formaldehyde and how to correctly dose biodegradable alternatives to maintain odor control without harming disposal options.

Hands-on testing now includes scenarios for high-rise units, where drivers practice extended hose setups and pressure management for vertical pumping. With the added material, certification takes about a day longer than before, focusing on practical skills for deluxe flushing units and ADA-compliant models with integrated sinks. For events with tight truck access, the program stresses pre-service planning to avoid missed pickups, ensuring drivers can navigate obstacles while meeting service schedules. This update ensures drivers are equipped for the full range of units on modern routes.
