Remote cabin build: Porta potty rental for 8 months or buy?

I'm building a small cabin on a wooded lot with no utilities yet. It's just me and my partner working on weekends, and we expect the project to take about eight months. We need a toilet solution that will handle two people using it a few times each day, no food or alcohol. The ground is level dirt, and a vacuum truck can drive right up to the site. I'm trying to decide between renting a standard portable toilet with monthly service or buying a unit and paying for pumping as needed. Which option is more cost-effective for a long-term project like this? Are there hidden costs I'm not considering?

Renting a standard portable toilet for eight months is more cost-effective than buying one for a two-person weekend project. The upfront cost of a new unit is high, and a long-term rental rate from a company will spread that cost over the project. You also avoid the hassle of owning the unit after the build is done.

For two people using a standard unit on weekends, a monthly service visit is sufficient. Weekly service is the industry norm for daily use, but your low usage allows for less frequent pumping. The rental company's monthly rental rate includes the unit, delivery, and scheduled service. The only other cost is a potential delivery fee for the initial placement and final pickup, which is often waived on long-term contracts. A handwash station is a good add-on for hygiene.

Buying a unit means you pay the full purchase price and then arrange and pay for each pumping service visit separately. After eight months, you own a used portable toilet that you must store, sell, or dispose of. The pumping service cost depends on the travel distance for the vacuum truck. Since your site has good truck access, that cost is lower, but the total expense of ownership still likely exceeds a long-term rental.
