Can a porta potty handle a year at a remote cabin?

Our family cabin sits off-grid in the mountains, no septic, and we visit about once a month for a weekend with 4-6 people. I'm considering renting a standard portable toilet to leave there year-round. The ground is uneven and rocky, but a service truck can drive right up to the site. Winters get cold, with temps well below freezing for months. I'm wondering if a standard unit can handle being unused for weeks at a time and still be serviced only quarterly. Should I look at a deluxe unit with a flushing bowl instead, or stick with the basic model? How does winterization work for long-term setups like this?

A standard portable toilet can handle a year at a remote cabin, but quarterly service is too infrequent for four to six people using it monthly. The holding tank in a standard unit holds 50 to 70 gallons. With your group size and weekend visits, it will fill up faster than quarterly service can handle. Expect to service it monthly or every other month to avoid overflows. A deluxe unit with a flushing bowl and sink uses more water, fills the tank quicker and freezes easily in winter, making it a poor choice for cold, off-grid use. Stick with the basic non-flushing model.

For winterization, operators add a brine or non-toxic antifreeze solution to the holding tank to prevent freezing solid. Since your truck access is good, servicing in winter is feasible. Place the unit on the most level ground you can find to keep it stable. The deodorizer will break down waste between visits, but long unused periods in heat can cause odors; monthly service helps. Rent long-term to lower the per-month cost.
