October 2026 wedding: 180 guests, 6 hours. ADA unit required?

My fiancé and I are getting married on my parents' property in October 2026. We're expecting 180 guests for a 6-hour outdoor reception with a catered dinner and an open bar. The ground is grassy and mostly level, and a truck can get within 20 feet of where we'd place the restrooms. I'm planning to rent portable toilets since there's no way the house bathrooms can handle that many people. I know I need enough units for the crowd, but I'm unsure about accessibility rules. Do I have to include an ADA-compliant portable toilet for this size event, or is that only for larger gatherings? How does the ADA cluster rule work for a private wedding?

Yes, you need at least one ADA-compliant portable toilet for your wedding. The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design require that where multiple single-user portable toilets are clustered at a single location, at least 5 percent of the units in each cluster must be accessible. For 180 guests over six hours with an open bar, you should rent more than the minimum units. A common guideline is about one standard portable toilet per 50 to 75 people for a four-hour event, but with alcohol and a longer duration, plan for additional units to avoid lines. Since you're clustering all units together, include one ADA unit. Your grassy, level ground with truck access within 20 feet is ideal for placement and servicing. Service frequency depends on use; weekly is standard, but for a one-day event, you'll likely schedule service after the wedding.
