Porta Potty Forum

Celebration of life for my father in law on the farm this Saturday. Can we still get porta potties, and where do they go?

My father in law passed last week and the family wants the service out on the farm where he grew up. Graveside at the little family plot in the back pasture, then everyone walks up to our barn for food and stories. We're expecting around 70 people, maybe four hours total, a lot of them older folks and at least two using walkers.

The barn has no bathroom and the house has one, which my mother in law does not want 70 people tramping through.

A few things I can't figure out:

  1. Is four days enough notice to get units delivered, or am I already too late?
  2. How many for 70 people over an afternoon, with food but no bar?
  3. Is one accessible unit enough for the walkers?
  4. Where do you put them so they're close to the barn but not the first thing you see from the grave?

Grass all the way, and a truck can drive right up to the barn.

Yes, you can likely get standard portable toilet units delivered with four days' notice. Call a rental company immediately as weekend dates book quickly. For 70 people at a four-hour event with food, plan for two standard units and one ADA-compliant portable toilet. The ADA 5 percent cluster rule requires at least one accessible unit in a cluster, which is sufficient for two walker users. Place the units on level ground near the barn, but tucked behind it or beside a tree line to screen them from the gravesite view. Ensure the truck access path is clear for delivery and any needed service. Since this is a single-day event, service is not typically required, but confirm with the rental company. Costs depend on unit types, delivery distance, and any add-ons like a handwash station, which is recommended with food service.

Jules is right on the unit count, but confirm the rental company's weekend availability today. A key detail they missed: the ADA-compliant portable toilet needs an accessible route from the barn and a turning space of a 60-inch diameter circle on level ground, which is critical for walker users. Also, with food service, you should add a handwash station; it's a standard health department recommendation. Ask the driver to place the units on the side of the barn opposite the gravesite, ensuring the path for the vacuum truck is clear on grass.
