Well down until spring 2027: one porta potty for family of four?

Our well pump died last week, and the replacement is a big job that will take until spring 2027. That's at least six months. Our family of four, two adults, two teenagers, needs a toilet for daily use. We have a flat gravel spot on the driveway where a truck can pull right up. I'm looking at renting a single unit for the duration. My main question is whether a standard portable toilet with its holding tank is enough for four people using it every day for half a year. The rental company suggested weekly service. Should I consider a deluxe unit with a flushing bowl and sink, or is that overkill? What about odor control over the long haul?

A standard portable toilet with weekly service is enough for four people for six months. The holding tank holds 50 to 70 gallons, and weekly pumping prevents overfilling. Your gravel driveway spot with truck access is ideal for service visits.

A deluxe unit with a flushing bowl and sink is overkill for a family. It requires a fresh water tank that freezes in winter and needs more frequent service due to the smaller holding tank. Stick with a standard unit for simplicity.

Odor control depends on the service frequency and the deodorizer formula. Weekly service replaces the deodorizer and cleans the interior. Request a formaldehyde-free deodorizer from the rental company; it works well and is accepted at wastewater plants.

Long-term rentals often have lower monthly rates. Confirm the service schedule includes winterization with antifreeze in the holding tank to prevent freezing.
