High-rise site: backup plan if service elevator is out in October 2026?

We are working a 12-story high-rise in Chicago. The job runs through next year. The crew is 120 people on two shifts. We have 15 standard units and one ADA-compliant unit on the 4th and 8th floor mezzanines. The rental company services them weekly via the service elevator. The building management just gave us a heads-up that the service elevator might be down for maintenance for up to five days in October. I need a backup plan for pumping. The street-level loading dock has space, but a vacuum truck cannot reach the upper floors. Has anyone dealt with a service elevator outage on a high-rise site? What are the options for waste removal when the usual access is blocked?

The backup plan for a service elevator outage is to relocate the portable toilets to street level for servicing. Move all units to the loading dock area during the outage window. Your rental company can then service them with a standard vacuum truck as usual. After servicing, the units must be returned to the upper floors once the elevator is operational. This is a common workaround for high-rise sites when vertical access is disrupted.

Coordinate with your rental operator on the timing. They will need a clear path to the loading dock and enough space to maneuver the truck. The crew will have to handle moving the units, which adds labor. Expect an extra trip charge for the special service, but it avoids a sanitation crisis. Your current setup meets OSHA 1926.51 for 120 workers with two shifts, so maintaining service frequency is critical. Weekly service is the norm, and a five-day delay would push limits, especially with two shifts using the units. Plan the move for the start of the outage to minimize downtime.
