October 2026 fall festival: do we need porta potties with lights for the evening?

We're planning an October 2026 fall festival with about 500 guests, running from noon to 10 PM on a Saturday. There will be food trucks, beer and wine, and live music after sunset. The site is a grassy park with level ground, and a service truck can pull right up to the placement area. I've ordered 10 standard portable toilets and one ADA-compliant unit, clustered near the main stage. My rental company offers solar lights that mount on the roof, but they're an add-on cost. I'm worried about trip hazards and usability in the dark, especially with alcohol served. Do we need lights on the porta potties for evening hours? Is a solar light enough, or should I look at other lighting options?

Yes, you need lights on the portable toilets for evening hours. The 2010 ADA Standards require that accessible routes and facilities remain usable, and adequate lighting is a key part of that. With alcohol served and crowds moving after sunset, trip hazards and usability become significant safety concerns. Solar lights mounted on the roof are a common and effective solution for portable toilets. They charge during the day and provide enough illumination inside the unit and around the entrance for safe use at night. Your cluster of 10 standard units and one ADA-compliant unit meets the ADA 5 percent cluster rule, and lighting ensures the accessible unit remains functional after dark. Since your site has level ground and good truck access, the solar lights should be sufficient; no other lighting options are necessary unless the park has no ambient light. The add-on cost for solar lights is driven by the equipment and installation, but it's a worthwhile investment for guest safety and compliance.
