Porta Potty Forum

Well is dry until spring 2027. Can a family of four use a porta potty full-time?

Our well pump failed last week and the replacement is on a six-month backorder. We're a family of four living in a rural house with no municipal water connection. Our only bathroom is completely non-functional without water. We need a full-time sanitation solution that will last until spring. The ground where we could place a unit is level gravel, and a truck can easily pull right up to the spot. I'm wondering if a standard portable toilet is realistic for four people for months, or if we should look at a deluxe unit with a flushing bowl and sink or even a restroom trailer. Has anyone done this long-term? What does the weekly service look like when it's your only toilet?

Yes, a family of four can use a portable toilet full-time for six months with the right setup and service plan. A standard portable toilet is workable, but a deluxe unit with a flushing bowl and sink or a restroom trailer will be more comfortable for daily living. For four people, one unit is sufficient by OSHA standards for a crew of that size, but expect to schedule service more often than weekly due to heavy use. Weekly service is the norm, but with four people using it as their only toilet, you may need pumping and cleaning twice a week to prevent overfilling and maintain hygiene. Your level gravel site with easy truck access is ideal for reliable service. The rental cost depends on the unit type, service frequency, and rental duration, deluxe units and restroom trailers cost more due to features like flushing mechanisms and sinks, and more frequent service adds to the price. For long-term comfort, invest in a higher-end unit and plan for mid-week service.
