Porta Potty Forum

Our well is dry until spring 2027. Can a long-term porta potty rental handle a family of four for 6 months?

Our well pump failed and the replacement is on a long backorder, so we have no running water until spring. I just ordered a standard portable toilet for our family of four, with weekly service starting next Monday. The unit is going on level gravel beside our driveway, about 20 feet from where the vacuum truck can park. I'm worried that weekly pumping might not be enough for constant use by two adults and two kids, especially through a wet Oregon winter. Has anyone else done a long-term rental like this? Did you need to upgrade to a deluxe unit or ask for more frequent service visits?

Yes, a weekly service should handle a family of four with a standard unit for six months. A standard portable toilet holds 50 to 70 gallons, and weekly pumping is the industry norm for normal use. The key is your family's usage pattern. If everyone is home all day, you might need more frequent service visits, especially with kids. You placed it on level gravel with good truck access, which is perfect. In a wet Oregon winter, the rental company will use a winterization antifreeze in the holding tank to prevent freezing. A deluxe unit with a flushing mechanism and sink requires a fresh water tank, which can freeze and complicate things in cold weather. For simplicity and reliability, the standard unit is your best bet. Monitor it the first week and call the operator if it fills up too fast to adjust the service frequency. Long-term rentals like this work fine with clear communication.
