Why is there a delivery fee on top of the rental rate?

I just got a quote for a standard portable toilet rental for our three-month bathroom renovation. The monthly rental rate is one line, but there's also a separate delivery fee. The unit will be placed on my driveway, which is flat asphalt and easy for a truck to pull right up to. I expected the rental cost to cover everything, so this extra fee surprised me. Is a separate delivery charge standard practice? What exactly does that fee cover, just the driver's time, fuel, the truck itself, or something else?

Yes, a separate delivery fee is standard practice in the portable toilet rental industry. The rental rate covers the cost of the unit itself sitting on your property, while the delivery fee covers the truck and driver bringing it to you.

This fee covers the driver's time, the fuel for the truck, truck maintenance, and the labor to load the unit at the yard, secure it for transport, unload it at your driveway, and position it. Even with easy access like your flat asphalt driveway, the operator still makes a dedicated trip for the delivery. The truck is a specialized piece of equipment, not just a standard pickup.

The delivery fee is a one-time charge for the initial placement. When your three-month rental ends, there will typically be a separate pickup fee for the removal. For long-term rentals like yours, the monthly rental rate is lower than a short-term event rate because the unit is in one place for an extended period, but the delivery and pickup logistics remain separate, dedicated trips that cost the operator the same regardless of rental duration.
