High-rise site in 2026: what's the protocol if a unit is vandalized overnight?

We have a 30-story residential tower going up downtown. The site has 90 workers on the concrete crew, so we have seven standard portable toilets and one ADA-compliant unit on the ground level, staked down. The units are on a paved area with truck access from the alley. Last night, someone broke the lock and door handle on one of the standard units. It's now unusable.

I need to know the exact protocol for this. Who do I call first, the rental company or site security? What information do they need to dispatch a replacement unit the same day? Does the rental agreement cover vandalism, or is that on us? How do you secure a unit to prevent this from happening again?

Call the rental company first, then loop in site security, because the rental company is the one that can get a swap truck rolling and their dispatch board fills up early in the day. When I call one in, I give them the site address and the alley entrance, the unit number stenciled on the door or the tag on the back, exactly what's broken (lock and handle, unit still upright, tank not leaking), and a phone photo. Ask for a swap on that day's route, or a repair on your next service visit if they can't fit you in.

Vandalism is usually on you. Every rental agreement I've signed holds the customer responsible for damage beyond normal wear, and a damage waiver, if you bought one, often covers accidents but excludes intentional damage. Read the exact wording on yours before you assume either way.

On headcount you're fine while you wait. OSHA 1926.51 calls for one toilet seat and one urinal per 40 workers once you're at 20 or more, so 90 guys needs three. Six working standard units plus the ADA unit clears that easily.

To stop a repeat, we chain the cluster together and to a fixed point, keep it lit, park it inside the camera view, and ask for units with a hasp so security locks them at night and opens them at shift start.
