Late fall framing job: do we need antifreeze in the porta potty before overnight freezes start?

We are framing an addition on a vacant lot through November. Crew is usually 6 to 8 guys. The standard unit sits on gravel by the driveway and gets weekly service.

Nights are starting to dip near freezing here. I am wondering if the holding tank or the hand sanitizer can freeze hard enough to crack something, and whether we should ask the rental company to winterize it (antifreeze dose, whatever they do for cold weather) before the first real freeze, or if weekly pumping is enough until it gets colder.

Also, if they winterize it, does that change how often they need to come out? We are on a month to month rental and I do not want a surprise service change mid job.

Anyone run units through late fall / early winter on a small residential site? What actually worked?

Yes, you should ask the rental company to winterize the standard unit before overnight freezes start. The hand sanitizer can freeze and clog, and while the holding tank liquid is less likely to crack the tank itself, solid waste can freeze into a block that makes pumping difficult or impossible. For a standard unit, winterization means adding a brine or non-toxic antifreeze solution to the tank to lower the freezing point. It does not change your weekly service frequency; the driver will still pump, clean, and recharge the antifreeze on each visit. On a small site like yours with 6 to 8 workers, one standard unit meets OSHA 1926.51 for construction. Just confirm with your rental company that they are doing cold-weather service, some operators switch formulas seasonally without telling you. I have run units through late fall in Texas; proactive winterization prevents missed service days when the pump truck cannot break through ice.
