Title: What's the benefit of a portable urinal on a construction site?

We've got a crew of 50 men on a six-month high-rise project in Phoenix. The heat means the crew drinks a lot of water, and the four standard units we have are constantly occupied. I'm looking at adding a couple of portable urinals to the cluster to cut down on the lines. The rental company says they take up less space and get used more quickly than a full unit. That should mean less wear and tear on the main toilets, and maybe we could stretch the service frequency a little. But it's another unit to pay for and have serviced. For those of you who've tried them, did the urinals actually reduce wait times enough to justify the extra cost and space on a tight site?

A portable urinal on a construction site reduces wait times and extends the capacity of your restroom cluster without taking up much space. For your crew of 50 men, OSHA 1926.51 requires a minimum of two facilities, which can be met with one toilet and one urinal or two toilets; you are already providing more than the minimum with four standard units. The main benefit of adding urinals is speed. A crew member using a urinal is in and out much faster than someone using a full toilet, which cuts down the line, especially during peak breaks. This reduces congestion and the wear on your four main units, since most visits are for liquid waste.

In my experience, urinals do justify the cost on a high-use site like yours. They are smaller and lighter than a standard unit, so they fit in tight spots. While you pay for an additional unit, the reduced strain on the toilets can sometimes allow you to extend the service frequency by a day or two if the rental company agrees, offsetting some cost. In Phoenix heat, crews drink more, so the urinals will get heavy use. Just ensure they are placed on level ground with good truck access for servicing.
