Porta potty for a hunting camp: will the vent stack attract bears?

We have a hunting camp in Montana for two months, with six hunters staying the whole time and guests on weekends. The ground is uneven mountain terrain, but a service truck can get to the spot with four-wheel drive. I am looking at a standard portable toilet because we have no power or water. I am worried about grizzly bears. The unit has a vent stack, and I know bears have a strong sense of smell. Will the vent stack attract bears? Should I ask the rental company for a different type of unit or a special deodorizer?

Yes, the vent stack on a standard portable toilet can attract bears because it releases odors from the holding tank. Bears have an extremely strong sense of smell and are drawn to food-related scents, including waste odors. For a hunting camp in grizzly country, this is a valid concern.

You should ask the rental company about bear mitigation options. Some operators offer units with locking vent caps or low-odor deodorizers formulated to minimize attractants. A formaldehyde-free deodorizer is standard now, but you need one specifically marketed for bear country. Avoid scented additives; they can make the smell more appealing.

Your setup sounds right: a standard unit suits no-power situations, and six hunters plus weekend guests fits within one unit's capacity with weekly service. Ensure the rental company knows about the terrain; they need truck access for servicing. Staking is critical on uneven ground to prevent tipping. Discuss service frequency; with heavy use, you might need twice-weekly pumping to keep odors down, which affects the monthly rate.
