Fall 2026 wedding: can we put porta potties on a sloped lawn?

My fall 2026 wedding is at my parents' place on a grassy hillside in Charleston. We're expecting 140 guests for about 6 hours with a catered dinner and an open bar. The rental company said they need level ground for the standard units and ADA-compliant unit we're planning to rent. The slope isn't steep, maybe a 5-degree incline, but it's consistent. A vacuum truck can drive right up to the spot. Has anyone placed porta potties on a slight slope for an event? Did you use blocks or leveling pads? Did guests notice or complain?

Yes, you can use a slight slope for the standard units, but the ADA unit is the one that needs a truly flat pad. Five degrees doesn't sound like much until a guest in heels opens a door that swings downhill on its own.

What worked for us at a backyard reception on a similar hill:

  • Ask the rental crew to shim the standard units with solid blocks or plywood under the skids so the floor sits level. They do this all the time. The tank sloshing toward one wall is what makes people notice, so level matters more than you'd think.
  • For the ADA unit, the 2010 ADA Standards want the clear floor space no steeper than 1:48, and an accessible route to it no steeper than 1:20 unless it's built as a ramp. A 5 degree lawn is steeper than both. Look for the flattest spot near the driveway or patio, even if it's a longer walk for everyone else.
  • Face the doors across the slope, not downhill. Nobody wants to step out and stumble forward.
  • Put a couple of solar path lights along the walk, since the dinner will run past dusk.

Guests at ours never mentioned it. They did mention the one unit we forgot to level.

Dave's right about the blocks, but the driver will also check that the units are stable enough to stay put when guests lean on them. A 5-degree slope is manageable with shims, but the rental crew needs to use solid wood or composite leveling pads, not just wedges, to prevent tipping. For your guest count and duration with an open bar, plan on at least four standard units plus the ADA unit, and schedule a mid-event service visit to empty the holding tanks and restock paper. The vacuum truck access is key, but confirm the ground is firm enough to support the truck's weight without sinking.
