Outdoor wedding: do I need a separate handwash station with the porta potties?

Handwash stations keep showing up on quotes for our outdoor wedding porta potties, and I am not sure what is actually useful versus padding.

We are planning a backyard ceremony near Asheville for about 90 guests. There is no indoor bathroom guests can use. One quote adds a freestanding handwash station next to the units. Another says deluxe units with a small sink already cover washing and we can skip the extra station. Catering will be on site, so people will be eating with their hands a fair bit during cocktail hour.

For a wedding this size, did you rent a separate handwash station, or did the sink inside a deluxe unit hold up through the evening? Any gotchas with refill water, paper towels, or placement near the food tables would help before I lock the order.

Yes, rent a separate handwash station for a wedding of 90 guests. A small sink inside a deluxe unit will not hold up for the whole event.

The sink in a deluxe unit has a limited fresh water tank, maybe a couple of gallons. For 90 guests, that water will run out before the cocktail hour is over, and someone has to refill it, which is not a task you want on your wedding day. A separate freestanding handwash station has a much larger water capacity, often 20 to 30 gallons, and includes its own soap and paper towel dispenser. It is designed for high traffic.

Place the handwash station between the portable toilet cluster and the food area, so guests pass it on their way back. Make sure it is on level ground and the rental company pre-fills it. The servicing for the station is usually included with the toilet service visit. Since you have food service, this is a basic health consideration that guests will notice if it is missing. I have seen a deluxe unit sink run dry by dinner, and people ended up using bottled water. The separate station is worth the line item.
