Why does our porta potty smell worse after a hot day?

We've got a standard portable toilet on our Phoenix job site. It sits in the sun all day and by 2 PM it smells terrible. The crew of 40 guys won't use it. It gets serviced weekly on Tuesdays, but by Wednesday afternoon the stink is back. The unit is on packed dirt, and the vacuum truck has no problem reaching it.

I know heat speeds up the breakdown of waste in the holding tank. More gas gets released, and the deodorizer can't keep up. The vent stack helps, but the inside of that plastic box just gets too hot.

Is the weekly service frequency wrong for this heat? Should I ask the rental company for a different type of deodorizer?

The weekly service frequency is likely insufficient for your standard portable toilet in the Phoenix heat. High temperatures dramatically accelerate the biological activity in the holding tank, producing more gases and overwhelming the standard deodorizer. Your crew of 40 workers requires at least one toilet under OSHA 1926.51, but a single unit under heavy use in extreme heat will fill and become odorous quickly.

You should ask the rental company to increase the service frequency. For a standard unit with 40 users in hot weather, twice-weekly service is a common adjustment. The rental contract will determine the cost impact, but the primary driver is the extra service visit. You could also inquire if they are using a formaldehyde-free deodorizer, as some formulas may perform better under high-temperature conditions. The placement on packed dirt is fine, but there is no practical way to cool the unit itself.
