Are formaldehyde-free deodorizers as effective in controlling odor in high-traffic events?

We rent for large festivals with crowds of 5,000+ over three-day weekends, mostly standard units and a few ADA-compliant ones on grass fields with easy truck access. There's always alcohol and food vendors, so odor control is critical. I've heard some venues now ban formaldehyde-based deodorizers due to wastewater treatment plant rules, but we rely on strong chemicals to keep things manageable in the heat. Our current formula works, but if we switch to formaldehyde-free, will it hold up under heavy use? Does anyone have experience comparing the two at high-traffic events with long hours and sun exposure? What brands or types perform best without formaldehyde?

Yes, formaldehyde-free deodorizers are as effective as formaldehyde-based ones for high-traffic events when used with proper servicing. Modern formaldehyde-free formulas use alternative biocides and surfactants that break down waste and control odor without the environmental concerns. In my experience on Phoenix job sites and large events, the key is service frequency, not the deodorizer type. For a three-day festival with 5,000+ people, alcohol, and heat, you need more than weekly service, plan for daily pumping and recharging of the holding tank to prevent overflow and odor buildup. The sun exposure accelerates evaporation and odor, so a consistent service schedule is critical. Use a formaldehyde-free deodorizer with a strong fragrance and high surfactant content; many rental companies now standardize on these due to wastewater treatment plant restrictions. Avoid brands with weak dye or low biocide concentration. For your event size, follow the guideline of one standard unit per 50-75 people and add units for alcohol and duration, ensuring ADA compliance with at least one accessible unit per cluster.
