Outdoor Fall Festival 2026: Will porta potties stink more with Indian Summer heat?

We're planning our town's big Outdoor Fall Festival for October 2026. It's a one-day event, Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM. We expect about 1,200 people. There will be food trucks and a beer garden. We usually rent a cluster of 20 standard portable toilets and 1 ADA-compliant portable toilet, placed on the grass field at the park. The service truck can drive right up to them.

My concern is the weather. Our October often has an Indian Summer, with temperatures spiking into the mid-80s°F. I'm worried that the heat will make the porta potties smell much worse than they do on a cooler autumn day. I don't want that to be the main thing visitors remember.

Is this a valid concern? Should we ask our rental company for a different service schedule or a specific type of deodorizer for the heat?

Yes, heat increases odor in portable toilets because it accelerates the breakdown of waste and the evaporation of the deodorizer. For your event, 20 standard portable toilets and one ADA-compliant portable toilet meet the guideline for 1,200 people with alcohol service. Heat will require more frequent servicing to control odor. Request a pre-event service the morning of the festival to ensure fresh deodorizer and empty tanks. Ask for a mid-day service visit if the rental company offers it for events, as this pumps the units and refreshes supplies during peak use. Specify formaldehyde-free deodorizer, which is standard now and works effectively without the environmental concerns of older formulas. Place the units in a shaded area if possible to reduce solar heating. With proper service timing and placement, odor should be manageable even in warm weather.
