Can a standard porta potty handle a year at a remote hunting camp?

We run a hunting camp in Montana that gets used a few weekends each season, maybe 8 guys at a time. The ground is uneven and a service truck has to drive 40 miles on rough roads to reach us. I’m looking at a standard portable toilet for the camp, but we’d only use it maybe 10 days total over the year. I don’t want to pay for weekly service when it sits empty most of the time. Will the plastic crack in the sun or cold? Will the holding tank smell terrible if it’s not pumped for months? What happens to the deodorizer when it just sits?

A standard portable toilet can handle a year at a remote hunting camp, but you must adjust the service schedule and prepare for environmental wear. The holding tank will develop strong odors if not serviced for months, as the deodorizer loses effectiveness over time and waste decomposes. The plastic shell resists cracking from sun and cold due to UV-stabilized polyethylene, but prolonged exposure to extreme temperature swings can cause brittleness. For your use, 8 people over 10 days, a single standard unit is sufficient under event guidelines, which suggest one unit per 50-75 people for short durations.

Service frequency drives cost: instead of weekly visits, schedule a pump-out after each hunting weekend or season. Discuss a custom service plan with your rental company, accounting for the 40-mile rough-road delivery. They may use a formaldehyde-free deodorizer formulated for longer intervals. Ensure placement on level ground to prevent tipping and ease servicing. The unit will sit fine unused, but periodic checks prevent issues like animal damage or weather-related wear.
