Porta Potty Forum

Barn party the Saturday before Thanksgiving and it'll be freezing. Can the porta potty sit just inside the barn door?

We host a lot of things in our barn but this is the first one this late in the year. My brother in law's 50th is the Saturday before Thanksgiving, about 70 people from 5 to 11, and the forecast already looks like it'll be in the 20s by the end of the night. Normally the standard units sit out on the gravel by the side door, but I keep picturing people walking out in the cold and the dark.

The barn has a big sliding door on the end, a concrete floor, and plenty of headroom. Is it ok to have the driver set one or two units just inside that door for the night? I'm mostly worried about the smell building up in a closed space, and whether the vent pipe on top needs to be outside to actually work. Has anyone done this, and do rental companies even allow it?

Yes, a standard unit can sit just inside the barn door if the rental company agrees. The vent stack on top does not need to be outside to function, but odor will concentrate in an enclosed space. For 70 people over six hours with alcohol, you need more than one unit. Follow the ADA cluster rule if you place multiple units.

Rental companies often prohibit indoor placement due to spill risk and liability. Concrete floors and high ceilings help, but confirm with your operator. They may require a damage waiver. Cold weather itself does not affect unit operation, as antifreeze is added to the holding tank. For warmth, consider a deluxe unit with a sink, but it needs antifreeze in its fresh water tank. Place units near the door for ventilation and service access.
