Porta Potty Forum

Neighbors are complaining about the porta potty on my driveway. What can I do?

We are six weeks into a bathroom remodel and have a standard portable toilet on our driveway. The driveway is gravel, the unit sits about 10 feet from the property line, and the rental truck can pull right up to it. Our neighbor texted yesterday to say they can smell it, especially when the wind blows a certain way. I haven’t noticed a smell myself, but I want to be a good neighbor. The service visit is weekly, and the unit is a standard non-flushing model with a holding tank and deodorizer. What can I do to address the complaint? Should I ask the rental company for more frequent service or a different type of unit?

Ask the rental company to check the deodorizer level and service the unit sooner. A weekly service visit is standard, but wind and sun can accelerate odor issues. The driver can add more formaldehyde-free deodorizer to the holding tank and ensure the vent stack is clear. If the smell persists, consider upgrading to a deluxe portable toilet with a flushing mechanism and sink, which often has better odor control. These units cost more due to the fresh water system and additional features. Placement matters too; even a few feet farther from the property line might help if the wind direction is consistent. Your setup sounds correct with gravel and good truck access, so the issue is likely service-related. Communicate with the rental company, they handle complaints like this regularly.

  • Sam O. Thanks, I'll call the company today to request an extra service visit and ask about a deluxe unit. Moving it a bit farther from the fence is a good idea too.

Call the rental company and request an extra service visit for odor control, which is a standard request they handle. Luis covered the deodorizer, but the driver should also verify the vent stack is unobstructed, as a clogged vent traps odors inside until the door is opened. A weekly service frequency is standard, but heat and wind can cause odors to escape more between visits. If the problem continues after an extra service, ask the company about a deluxe portable toilet; its flushing action and enclosed waste system often contain smell better, though it will increase your monthly rental rate.
