Does shade actually cut porta potty smell on a summer job site?

We're on a framing job through July and the only flat spot the truck can reach sits in full sun most of the day. The crew starts complaining that the standard unit reeks by mid-afternoon even though weekly service is still happening on schedule. There's a shady strip along the fence line, but it's farther from the gate and the driver said hose reach might be tight.

Does putting the unit in shade actually slow the smell in heat, or is that mostly folklore? Would we be smarter leaving it where the truck can service it clean and just adding a second weekly pump instead?

Looking for practical experience from hot job sites. Temps here are regularly over 90.

Yes, shade reduces porta potty odor on a hot job site by lowering the temperature inside the unit. Heat accelerates the breakdown of waste and the evaporation of the deodorizer, which is why a unit in full sun gets smelly faster. Moving it to the shady strip will help.

However, if the new location makes service difficult, you create a different problem. A blocked unit or one where the vacuum hose can't reach is a missed service. Talk to your rental company. They might have a longer hose or can confirm if the shady spot is workable. If it's not, then increasing the service frequency to twice a week is the next best option for a crew of your size in 90-degree heat.

On a framing crew, you likely fall under OSHA 1926.51, which sets minimum toilet numbers based on worker count. Make sure you have enough units; one overloaded toilet will always smell worse. Adding a second standard unit in the shade, if space allows, spreads the use and can be more effective than just more pumping of a single unit.
