ADA-compliant restroom trailer: turning space dimensions inside?

The wheelchair turning space inside an ADA-compliant restroom trailer must provide a clear floor area of 60 inches in diameter or a T-shaped space per section 304 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. This allows a wheelchair to complete a full turn without obstruction, ensuring independent access to fixtures like the toilet, sink, and grab bars.

Key dimensions and features: The accessible compartment must also include a toilet with a centered 17- to 19-inch height, side and rear grab bars, a sink with knee clearance, and a door that opens outward with lever-style hardware. These elements work together with the turning space to meet accessibility requirements.

Event planning considerations: For your client's event, confirm the trailer's interior layout with the rental company, especially if it's a multi-stall unit. Place the trailer on level ground with a firm surface and ensure accessible pathways to it. If the event includes food, alcohol, or runs longer than a few hours, factor in higher usage and potential need for additional accessible facilities or more frequent servicing.

Restroom trailers typically require electrical hookups or a generator, plus a water source or onboard tank. Always verify truck access for delivery and pumping. Does your client have specific attendee numbers or duration details to refine the setup?

Sixty inches is right, but in a trailer the thing that usually fails is the compartment layout, not the circle itself. Section 304.3 of the 2010 ADA Standards allows either a 60 inch diameter circle or a T-shaped space inside a 60 inch square, and the turning space is allowed to overlap the knee and toe clearance under the sink. That overlap is how most trailer floor plans fit it in.

A few details worth tightening in the checklist above. Seat height is 17 to 19 inches per 604.4, but the toilet is not centered in the room. Its centerline sits 16 to 18 inches from the side wall per 604.2. The side grab bar is at least 42 inches long and the rear bar at least 36 inches, mounted 33 to 36 inches high. The door rule in 604.8.1.2 is that it can't swing into the minimum compartment area, and the sink rim tops out at 34 inches.

The part that trips people up at events is getting in the door. Trailers sit up on steps, so the accessible unit needs a ramp no steeper than 1:12 with level landings, per section 405. When we had one at a backyard party, I had the ramp set and checked before guests showed up, because a ramp on soft grass shifts. Ask for the accessible restroom trailer spec sheet and put it on level ground.
