High-rise site: winter 2026, will porta potties freeze on the roof?

We're starting a 20-story build in Chicago this January. I need to place four standard units and one ADA-compliant unit on the roof deck for 75 workers. The roof is exposed, concrete, and we'll have to crane-lift them up. No truck access after placement, so the service crew will use the construction elevator. I know OSHA 1926.51 requires units for the crew count, but I'm worried about the Chicago winter. Will the liquid in the holding tank freeze solid up there? What about the deodorizer and the seat? Do I need to order a special winterized unit or just ask for more frequent service?

Yes, the liquid in a standard portable toilet holding tank will freeze solid on an exposed Chicago roof in January. The deodorizer solution and any water in the bowl will also freeze, making the unit unusable. The seat becomes brittle and can crack. You do not need a special winterized unit, but you must order a winter service plan from your rental company.

A standard unit relies on a brine or non-toxic antifreeze solution added to the holding tank during each service visit to prevent freezing. Since you have no truck access, confirm the service crew can transport pumping equipment via the construction elevator. The antifreeze must be replenished regularly; weekly service is not enough in deep cold. Expect service every three to four days, or after any significant snowfall that blocks the units.

Your unit count meets OSHA 1926.51 for 75 workers. The ADA unit satisfies the cluster rule. The cost driver is the high service frequency and the crane lift for delivery and removal. Discuss the winter service add-on and elevator access with your rental company before signing the contract.
