Family of six, well down until spring 2027. One porta potty enough?

We're a family of six with a well pump that just died. The repair is scheduled, but the parts are backordered until spring 2027, so we're looking at months without running water. Our only bathroom is out of commission until then. I rented a standard portable toilet from a local company, and they dropped it off on our gravel driveway yesterday. It's about 25 feet from where the truck can park, on level ground. My question is whether one standard unit is enough for six people full-time for that long. We're all adults and teens, no little kids, and we're not having parties or anything. But it's our only toilet for everything. Should I be looking at a deluxe unit with a sink or even a restroom trailer instead? What's the realistic service frequency for heavy use like this?

One standard unit is not enough for a family of six full-time for months. OSHA 1926.51, for construction crews, requires more toilets for fewer people, and your use is constant. A standard portable toilet holds 50 to 70 gallons and will fill quickly with six people. Expect to need service every three to four days instead of weekly. Add a handwash station for hygiene, as the unit lacks a sink.

Consider upgrading to a deluxe unit with a flushing toilet and sink, or a restroom trailer if you have power and level ground. These handle heavy use better but cost more due to complexity and service needs. The rental company bases pricing on unit type, service frequency, and duration. For your long rental, negotiate a monthly rate. Ensure the service truck has clear access to avoid missed service charges.
