Hunting camp porta potty: will it freeze in October in Montana?

Luis A.asked 0 viewsHome Renovations & Long-termWinterizationLong term rentalService frequencyHunting campStandard unit

We have a hunting camp up in the mountains, about 40 miles out from town. It gets used every weekend in October by a group of 10 to 12 hunters. Nights drop below freezing, sometimes into the 20s, and we're on rocky, uneven ground, the service truck can make it to the spot, but it's a rough ride. Right now, we're using a standard portable toilet with a holding tank. I'm worried about it freezing up and becoming useless. Do we need a special winterized unit, or will the standard one hold up with the right service? What do other remote camps do for cold weather?

A standard portable toilet with a holding tank will freeze in Montana October temperatures without winterization. Operators prevent freezing by adding a brine or non-toxic antifreeze solution to the holding tank during service visits. Since your camp has 10 to 12 people using it over weekends, weekly service is the minimum frequency, but you may need more frequent pumping if usage is heavy. The rocky, uneven ground requires staking the unit securely to prevent tipping. Your rental company can advise on a winter service schedule and confirm their vacuum truck can handle the rough access road. For remote camps, sticking with a standard unit and adjusting the service plan is common; upgrading to a flushing unit or restroom trailer introduces fresh water tanks that freeze more easily and require power and level ground.
