High-rise site: what's the backup plan if the service elevator is reserved by another trade?

We have a 40-story tower going up in Phoenix. The crew is 120 men, so we have four standard units and one ADA-compliant unit on the 15th floor. They get serviced weekly. The elevator schedule is a nightmare. Last week, the plumbing trade reserved both service elevators during our service window. The vacuum truck driver showed up, waited an hour, and left. That unit didn't get pumped. Now the crew is complaining about the smell in this heat. What's the backup plan when the elevator is taken? Do I need to negotiate a hard slot with the GC, or should I move the units to a lower floor with better access?

Negotiate a guaranteed service elevator slot with the general contractor in your contract. That is the backup plan for high-rise service visits. Your crew size of 120 men requires a minimum of three toilets and three urinals under OSHA 1926.51, so four standard units and one ADA-compliant unit meet the rule. The driver's time is scheduled; a missed slot means a missed service, and the unit will smell in Phoenix heat. Weekly service is the norm, but high temperatures accelerate odor. Moving units to a lower floor with reliable access is a good idea if the GC approves the location. The rental company will charge for the move, and you will pay for the missed service trip. Secure that elevator time in writing.
