What factors make a monthly rental rate go up after the first year?

Our bathroom renovation ran long, so we've had a standard portable toilet on our driveway for a year now. The rental company just sent the renewal quote, and the monthly rate went up. I'm trying to figure out why. The unit gets light use, just my family of four, and sits on level concrete where the vacuum truck can pull right up. We've never missed a service visit. Is this a standard annual increase, or does something like the holding tank wear or the deodorizer formula cost more over time? What factors typically make a long-term rental rate increase after the first year?

Yes, a rate increase on a long-term rental after the first year is standard industry practice. Your rental company likely gave you an introductory rate for the first year to secure the business, and the renewal quote reflects the standard ongoing rate. The increase is not tied to your specific usage, placement, or service frequency. It covers the operator's rising costs: fuel for the vacuum truck, wages, waste disposal fees, and general inflation. The holding tank does not wear out from normal use, and deodorizer costs are a small part of the service. Long-term contracts often have annual price adjustments built in. You can ask the rental company if they offer a multi-year agreement to lock in a rate, but expect some increase each year regardless.
