October 2026 5k race: how many porta potties for 300 runners and volunteers?

I'm organizing a 5k race in October 2026 with 300 runners and volunteers. The event starts at 7 AM and runs for about 4 hours. We expect high usage at the start and finish lines. The crowd is a mix of men and women, and we'll have a water station but no alcohol or food vendors. The units will be placed on grass in a city park, with good truck access for delivery and service. I'm considering a mix of standard portable toilets and at least one ADA-compliant unit. How many standard units should I order, and should I add any deluxe units or a restroom trailer for the volunteers?

Order 6 standard portable toilets and 1 ADA-compliant unit for your 300-person 5k race. The ADA cluster rule requires at least one accessible unit when you have multiple toilets. Add a handwash station near the cluster for hand cleaning.

OSHA 1926.51 sets minimums for workers, but for events with guests, use the industry guideline of about one unit per 50 to 75 people for a four-hour event. Your crowd is mixed gender with high usage at start and finish, so lean toward the lower end. No alcohol or food means you avoid that extra demand.

A restroom trailer is overkill for a four-hour race. It needs power, level ground and more cost. Deluxe units with flushing and sinks also cost more to rent and service. Stick with standard units and a handwash station.

Service is not needed during the event. The rental company will deliver clean units and pick them up after. Just make sure the grass is firm and the truck access stays clear on both days.
