October 2026 fall fair: do we need porta potties with lights for evening hours?

We're planning our October 2026 fall fair, which will have food vendors and run from 2 PM to 10 PM. We expect around 400 guests. The fair is on a grassy field in a park with good truck access for delivery. We're renting a mix of standard portable toilets and at least one ADA-compliant unit. My main concern is the evening hours. After sunset, the area will be lit by some string lights and a few floodlights, but it won't be bright. I'm worried about safety and people finding their way safely to and from the units. Do we need to request porta potties with built-in solar lights for evening hours? What are the safety requirements or best practices for lighting around portable restrooms at night?

Yes, ask for units with built-in lights, but don't count on them to light the walk. The bigger safety win is putting the bank where your floodlights already reach.

We run an evening harvest night in our park every fall. The little light inside the door is fine for finding the latch and the paper, and that's about it. Solar ones also need sun on the panel all day, and late October days are short, so ask the driver to set them with the panels facing open sky instead of under trees.

What worked for us:

  • Cluster every unit in one row facing the main walkway, not tucked behind the food trucks.
  • Aim one floodlight at the front of the row and run string lights from the fairway to it.
  • Put the ADA unit on the end closest to the path, on level ground, with a firm route at least 36 inches wide to the door. Grass gets slick with evening dew, so keep that route short and lit.
  • Keep a couple of headlamps at the info table for whoever does restock checks after dark.

If you can, walk the field yourself around 9 PM a week or two before. You'll find the dark corner in about two minutes.
