October 2026 fall festival: do we need lighted porta potties for evening use?

Our October 2026 fall festival will have about 800 people and runs from noon until 9:00 PM, so it will be fully dark the last two hours. We're serving beer and wine, and we have food trucks. The portable toilets will be placed on a flat grass field in the park, and a vacuum truck can drive right up to them on the asphalt path. I'm putting together the special event permit application and need to decide on the restroom plan. We'll have a mix of standard units and at least one ADA-compliant unit for the cluster. My main concern is safety after sunset, I'm wondering if we need to rent units with solar lights built in or if placing a few standalone solar lights nearby would be enough. Do lighted porta potties make a real difference for guest safety and navigation? How do rental companies handle lighting for evening events?

Yes, you need lighted portable toilets for an evening event. The last two hours of your festival will be dark, and serving alcohol increases the risk of trips and falls. A standard unit with a built-in solar light provides internal illumination, which helps users see the interior and locate the seat and paper. For navigation, standalone solar lights placed around the cluster are essential to light the paths between units and the area around the ADA-compliant unit.

Lighting makes a real difference for safety and reduces liability. Rental companies offer solar lights as an add-on for standard units or as part of deluxe and ADA-compliant models. The cost is driven by the type of lighting and the number of units. Since your event is nine hours with alcohol and food, plan for more than the baseline guideline of one unit per 50 people. A weekly service visit is standard, but for a single-day event, the rental company will service after the event, not during.
