October 2026 5k race: how many porta potties for 300 runners?

I'm coordinating a charity 5k run scheduled for October 2026. We expect 300 adult runners, with registration and the race itself running from about 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., four hours total. We'll have a finish line festival with water stations and light snacks, but no alcohol. The event is in a city park on flat grass, and a vacuum truck can drive right up to the proposed placement area near the start/finish line.

I know the basics, like needing at least one ADA-compliant portable toilet for accessibility. But I'm stuck on the total count. Should I stick with basic standard units or consider a restroom trailer for a nicer experience? Given the crowd size and duration, how many units should I plan for in the permit application?

Order 6 standard portable toilets and 1 ADA-compliant portable toilet for 300 runners at a four-hour event. The ADA 5 percent cluster rule requires one accessible unit in this cluster. Skip the restroom trailer; it needs power and leveling, and your park placement with truck access suits standard units better.

Industry planning uses one unit per 50 to 75 people for a four-hour event without alcohol. Your 300 runners need 4 to 6 units, so 6 standard units cover peak use. Add the ADA unit for accessibility.

Service frequency depends on use. A four-hour event needs no mid-event service if units start fresh. Confirm with your rental company that they deliver clean units the morning of the event. Weekly service is the norm for rentals, but your short rental may have a different rate structure based on delivery and pickup dates.

Place units on level ground near the start/finish line with clear truck access. Staking prevents tipping on grass. Handwash stations or hand sanitizer dispensers add hygiene for your snack area.

  • Toni S. Agree on sticking with standard units for a race. Our crunch was the half hour before the start, not the finish, so we set the line facing away from the start corral so it never spilled into it.
