Porta potties for a 5K: how many, where, and do urinals help with the start line rush?

We’re planning a 5K run with about 400 participants. The biggest logistical headache I foresee is the bathroom rush right before the start. Everyone will be arriving and needing to go within a 30-minute window at the registration and start area, which is a grassy field in a park. A service truck can get right up to the spot.

I’m trying to figure out how many standard portable toilets to rent. I know events need more than a construction site, and I’ve heard adding portable urinals can help move the line faster for men. I also need at least one ADA-compliant unit for accessibility.

For a crowd of 400 runners, how many total units should I get? Where is the best place to put them to manage the lines? And do separate urinals really make a difference with that pre-race rush?

For a 400-runner 5K, size the bank for the 30-minute pre-start rush, not for how quiet the course gets once people are out on the route. Construction-style OSHA toilet counts do not map cleanly to a race start, because almost everyone hits the units in the same short window.

I have worked races and festivals where the start-line bank was the whole fight. Put the cluster right by registration and the start corral on firm ground the truck can reach, with a clear walk-up lane so the line does not block check-in. Keep the ADA-compliant unit on a level path with room to turn a chair, not buried behind the standard bank.

Portable urinals do help at that rush. A lot of the pre-race traffic is quick men's use, and pulling that out of the standard portable toilet line shortens waits for everyone else, including women and kids who need a stall. Ask your rental for an event layout that pairs stalls with urinals and at least one ADA unit, and tell them you have a hard 30-minute peak before the gun. That peak is what drives the count more than total headcount alone.
