Hunting camp: will a porta potty attract bears or other wildlife?

We run a hunting camp in Montana. The crew will be about six people for a week in October, with food cooked on a camp stove. Our spot is in a clearing, mostly level, and the service truck can get within 20 feet of where we'd put the unit. We're in serious bear country, and I'm concerned that the odor from a standard portable toilet will attract bears or other curious wildlife. I know the deodorizer is supposed to control smell, but I've seen what a bear will do to a garbage can. Is a portable toilet a bad idea up here? What's the real risk, and are there any specific units or setups that are safer for wildlife areas?

A standard portable toilet will not attract bears more than your camp's food and cooking odors already do. The deodorizer in a portable toilet is designed to mask human waste odors with a strong chemical fragrance, which is not a natural food smell for bears. Bears are primarily attracted to food odors, especially greasy, sweet, or protein-rich scents from cooking, garbage, or improperly stored provisions.

For six people on a week-long trip, one standard unit is sufficient. Place it downwind and at least 100 yards from sleeping and cooking areas, following standard bear safety protocols. Ensure the rental company uses a formaldehyde-free deodorizer, as some wastewater treatment plants restrict formaldehyde and it has no bearing on wildlife attraction. The service visit will involve a vacuum truck pumping the holding tank and replenishing the deodorizer and toilet paper. Since you are in a remote area, confirm with the rental company that they service such locations and discuss any additional fees for travel distance. The unit itself is sturdy and latched, but like any camp item, it should be situated away from high-traffic wildlife zones.
