Month bathroom remodel with two kids: is a flushing deluxe worth it over a standard unit?

We're ripping out our only bathroom for about five weeks. Four of us live here, two adults and two kids (8 and 11). The contractor put a standard unit on the driveway quote, but the rental office also pitched a flushing deluxe unit with a small sink for more money.

The kids are already complaining about "the blue toilet outside." I'm trying to figure out whether the flush and sink actually matter for daily home use, or if that is mostly a comfort upgrade that does not change how often they pump it.

Weekly service is included either way. Has anyone done a multi-week remodel with kids on a deluxe versus a standard, and was the upgrade noticeable enough to bother? Also wondering if we still need a separate handwash station if the deluxe already has a sink.

Yes, a flushing deluxe unit is worth the extra cost for a five-week home remodel with a family of four. The flush makes it work like a normal toilet, and the sink means you do not need a separate handwash station. Your kids will notice the difference because a deluxe unit feels more like a bathroom and less like a campsite.

A standard unit has a non-flushing holding tank that relies on gravity and chemical deodorizer. A deluxe unit has a foot flush that moves waste into the tank and a small sink with a gravity-fed water supply for handwashing. The weekly service visit is the same for both: the driver pumps the holding tank, adds deodorizer, and restocks toilet paper. The service frequency is based on use, not the type of unit. With four people, weekly service is adequate.

The cost difference comes from the unit itself. A deluxe unit is more expensive to buy and maintain, so the monthly rental rate is higher. But it replaces the standard unit and the handwash station, which you would otherwise rent separately. For a month-long situation where this is your only toilet, the comfort upgrade is significant.

Ray is right on comfort, but the deluxe unit's sink does not replace a handwash station for a family. The small sink on a deluxe unit has a limited gravity-fed water supply, maybe a gallon, which is fine for a rinse but not for thorough handwashing after a diaper change or before meals. A separate handwash station has a larger tank, foot pump, soap, and a proper drain for gray water. For four people over five weeks, especially with kids, I would keep the handwash station even with the deluxe unit. The flush is a real upgrade, but the sink is more of a convenience than a hygiene solution.
