I'm renting a single standard portable toilet for a two-week construction clean-up job on an open lot. The rental company's agreement has an optional damage waiver. The unit will be sitting by itself on level gravel, with easy truck access for the weekly service. The waiver is an extra charge, but it covers repair costs if the unit is vandalized or tipped over. My crew is small and careful, but the site is unfenced and near a public road. The rental company says without the waiver, I'd be billed for any damage beyond normal wear and tear. I'm trying to decide if the peace of mind is worth the added cost. For a situation like this, is the waiver a good buy? What kind of damage actually gets billed if you skip it?

The damage waiver is worth paying for on an unfenced lot next to a public road, even when your crew is careful.

Normal wear is scuffs, tank residue, and routine chemical top-offs. What gets billed without a damage waiver is tip-overs, smashed doors, broken vents, graffiti that needs a full shell scrub, stolen hand-sanitizer dispensers, and fire or impact damage that takes the unit out of service. On open clean-up sites I have seen units tipped by kids after hours more often than by the crew. A gravel pad and weekly service help, but they do not stop roadside vandalism.

Read the contract for what "normal wear" excludes. Some agreements still charge for missing accessories even with the waiver. If the lot stays open overnight with no fence, take the waiver for the short rental and keep the standard portable toilet as far from the road as truck access allows. For a two-week job the peace of mind usually beats arguing over a repair invoice later.
