200-person festival with beer garden: how many porta potties?

I'm finalizing the restroom order for a 200-person, six-hour outdoor festival next month. There's a dedicated beer garden area and a food truck. The site is a flat, grassy field with easy truck access for delivery and service. My priority is avoiding the long, messy lines that can ruin a guest's day. I'm considering a mix of standard units for the main crowd and a deluxe unit or two near the food vendors for a nicer option. I know we'll need at least one ADA-compliant unit to meet the ADA cluster rule. Given the alcohol and the duration, should I just follow the basic units per person guideline or add more? And is a restroom trailer overkill for a crowd this size, or would it significantly improve the experience?

Add more than the basic units per person number once beer is in the mix. The chart assumes normal traffic, and a beer garden pushes trips way up in the back half of the day, which is exactly when lines form.

What worked for us at a similar size festival:

  • Split into two banks instead of one. Put one bank close to the beer garden but not right next to the food truck, and the second near the main stage or entry. People will not walk across a field to the other side, so one big cluster just makes one big line.
  • Put at least one accessible unit in each bank, not just one for the whole site. That is how the ADA cluster rule works, it goes by cluster.
  • Handwash stations by the food truck and by the beer garden bank. Sanitizer alone gets ugly fast with food around.
  • Ask about a mid event pump and restock. Six hours with drinking is long enough that paper runs out and the floors get gross.

A restroom trailer is not overkill but it is a nice to have, not a fix for lines. If budget is tight, spend it on extra standard units first. A couple of deluxe units near the vendors gets you most of the nicer feel.
