Winter 2026: will our construction site porta potties freeze solid?

Our site in Chicago has 95 workers on site for a 10-week project through January. We have a cluster of ten standard portable toilets and one ADA-compliant unit on a concrete slab. The rental company does weekly service. I'm worried the holding tanks and the liquid waste will freeze solid during a cold snap, making the units unusable.

The standard units are non-flushing with a holding tank that holds the waste and deodorizer. The ADA-compliant unit is larger but also non-flushing. The ground is level and the vacuum truck has good access. We don't have any restroom trailers or flushing units.

What's the best practice to keep these units functional? Does the service company add something to the tanks, or do we need to switch to a different type of unit entirely?

The rental company will add a non-toxic antifreeze solution to the holding tanks during winter service visits to prevent freezing. You do not need to switch to a different type of unit for a Chicago winter. A standard portable toilet with a holding tank is the standard for construction sites in cold climates. Your setup meets OSHA 1926.51 for 95 workers, which requires at least three units (you have eleven), and the ADA-compliant portable toilet satisfies the cluster rule.

Weekly service is the norm, but during extreme cold, you can request more frequent pumping. The vacuum truck operator adds a brine or glycol-based antifreeze to the tank when servicing. This lowers the freezing point of the waste and deodorizer solution. Your concrete slab and good truck access are ideal. Confirm with your rental company that they use a winter service protocol. Flushing units or restroom trailers are more prone to freezing because of their fresh water systems and are not recommended for unattended winter sites.
