Backyard wedding for 75 guests: do we need a handwash station if we have a deluxe unit?

We're planning a backyard wedding for 75 guests, with a tent, passed appetizers, and an open bar. The rental company recommended a deluxe portable toilet, which has a flushing toilet, a small sink with running water, and a hand sanitizer dispenser inside. It'll be placed on level grass about 50 feet from the catering area, and the truck can drive right up to it for delivery and pickup. My question is whether the built-in sink and sanitizer are enough for hygiene with food being served, or if we should also rent a separate handwash station. Does the sanitizer count as proper handwashing for a wedding with appetizers?

Yes, you need a separate handwash station. The built-in sink in a deluxe portable toilet is for personal use after using the toilet, not for food handlers or guests before eating. Hand sanitizer does not replace handwashing with soap and running water when food is served.

Health department rules for events with food require a dedicated handwash station near the food preparation and serving area. It must have a continuous supply of potable water, soap, and single-use towels. Your caterers will need it for their staff, and guests will use it before handling appetizers.

Place the handwash station next to the catering area, not by the toilet. The deluxe unit is fine for the toilet needs of 75 guests, especially with an open bar, but the handwash station is non-negotiable for food safety.
